The majority of evangelists mean well. All they really wish is for their friends and loved ones to know and grow closer to Jesus. They wish to carry out God’s work and spread His word. However, that said, many evangelists approach people with a myriad of wrong ideas and myths about their vocation.

In this piece, we’re going to go over the three most common myths about evangelism that we need to leave behind in order to deliver the Word of God in the most authentic manner possible. Let’s get right into it.

Myth #1: Two Groups of People Exist—Us and Them

One of life’s greatest fallacies is to view everything as a binary—in other words, to see everything as black and white, good and evil, right and wrong. Life is complex, and most people and their relationships with each other are complex too. We aren’t on two sides of a fence. We are all on a path. Of course, there is a point when a person may choose to accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior and to follow Him. But that is only one step along the way. Once you come to realize this, you will begin to view people in a completely new light.

Myth #2: We Must “Fix” People’s Mistaken Views of God

Once you realize that everyone travels their own journey, you understand that it isn’t your place to fix anything. You aren’t there to fix anyone, to fix their beliefs, their behavior, etc. People have their own way of finding and moving toward the Truth. The best you can and should do is to walk alongside them.

Myth #3: Thinking the Bible Isn’t Relevant Anymore

While most evangelists don’t believe the Bible is outdated, we hear it all around us. We are conditioned to believe that the Bible is far too removed from present reality to hold any real meaning for us. As a result, many of us shy away from referring to or quoting the Bible because we fear people will shun us. We fear they will think we’re out of touch.

However, there is real power in referring to the Bible. There is power and meaning in Biblical stories and language. People open their hearts to them and the messages they convey when you know how to use these stories. The Bible’s metaphors and Jesus’ parables are universal that, when you truly think about it, acutely pertain to our current times.
