It can be devastating to learn that someone close to you, like a husband or a sibling or a child, doesn’t believe in God anymore. It can sometimes even feel like a direct attack on your faith, and you may get defensive, even though it has nothing to with you. Alas, despite God’s supreme omnipotence and sovereignty, He honors the choices we make of our own free will. So, where does that leave you?
Well, you cannot force anyone to believe but can pray that the person finds salvation in God. Here’s how you can do that.
Love
More than anything, your desire for the person to believe should be an expression of your deep love for them. It should be an earnest call for God to shower them with His deep and unconditional love. In John 6:44, Jesus says,
“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day.”
It is more than appropriate for us to express our love for the person by asking God to shine His love upon them. We want them to come to Jesus, and God’s love is the only way that will ever happen.
Light
Going beyond love is to ask God to open the eyes of the person so that they may see the Light. In 2 Corinthians 4:4, we learn that,
“The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that
displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.”
It is not up to us to pray that God forces those we love to choose Jesus. Instead, it should be the loving act of Jesus that helps them see the Truth.
Freedom
Lastly, you must pray that God frees the unbeliever from the bondage that keeps them from joining the rest of us in Christ. Make your battle a spiritual one. Pray that your loved one exercises their freedom to choose Christ.
