We all recognize the songs of nature—the rushing mountain streams, cascading waterfalls, crashing ocean waves, falling leaves, songs of birds, moonlit nights, gorgeous sunrises. Few things can compare to the absolute majesty and beauty of nature. And nature’s songs declare the glory of God the Creator. They all have a message to profess; we just need to listen.

So, with that in mind, this piece is dedicated to the ways in which God communicates with His people. Let’s get right into it, shall we?

Understanding God as a Composer

A composer is someone who writes music. A composer’s vision and foresight, their message, is what’s written down for others to communicate by playing instruments. The composer is fundamentally in control of what has to be played and how it must be played. Is this bar going to be quicker than the rest? Is this note going to be loud or soft? What sort of tonality do I wish brass to convey?

It’s useful to think of God as a composer too. After all, He is the one who created the awe-inspiring world around us. He communicates with us, His people, through His creation. The sounds of nature, the rhythm of the seasons, the interplay of light and surface, the multitude of smells, all of it make up the notes, the chords, the measures, and the bars of His composition.

That, however, is just one way that God speaks to us. He also communicates with us through His Word, written, visible, and preached.

God’s Creation

What do you feel God’s creation says to you about Him? If you turn to Psalm 19:1 for help, it tells us that,

“The heavens declare the glory of God,

and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.”

Nature, God’s creation, declares the magnificence, power, wisdom, and goodness of the Creator.

The Word of God

Of course, this won’t come as a surprise, but God communicates with His people through His Word. Through the written and preached Word, He communicates His message to us. Peter reminds us that scripture is God’s written message. God’s words of salvation, blessing, comfort, and restoration are all found in scripture. We need only to listen.
