The Roman Catholic Church recognizes over 10,000 saints. Some of these saints were around before the birth of Jesus and are therefore mentioned in the Old Testament, while others are mentioned in the New Testament, and others have been canonized in recent years like Mother Teresa of Calcutta.
Saints play an important role in our faith. Their work has proven to be an important milestone in helping our community reach where it has. Their selfless work and love for God are things we need to learn and cherish.
There’s a lot that we can learn from saints, particularly in this modern world. Here are some lessons to learn from them:
To work for the community
Saints, whether mentioned in the Bible or canonized later, have all worked for the community in some way or the other. They were able to differentiate between wrong and right and stood up for the people of God at the time. Let’s take Mother Teresa as an example, she devoted her life to taking care of the poorest of poor people in the slums of Calcutta. While she didn’t have the funds necessary to make ends meet, she relied on her trust in the Lord alone to provide for the children there. She began an open-air school, and eventually, people volunteered and contributed to her cause.
We live in a world that’s full of turmoil, injustice, and unhappiness. With the ongoing pandemic, so many people struggle to put food on the table, while others struggle with feelings of loneliness and isolation. Volunteer your time to help the community in whatever way you can so you too can bring a smile to the faces of the people in need.
To forgive others
We can all agree that we live in a world where forgiveness is rare to come by. We’ve become quick to judge others and find it difficult to forgive those who have wronged us, whether deliberately or not. One thing we can take away from the incredible stories of the saints is to forgive those who have wronged us. Let’s take Saint Lawrence, for example, he was burned at the stake, yet he didn’t hold it against the perpetrators of the crime. If he can forgive those who did him wrong, we can forgive those in our lives that are asking for forgiveness.
