Have you ever wondered, “Can Jesus really forgive my past?”

Perhaps you carry regret over choices you made years ago. Maybe you hurt someone, damaged relationships, followed the wrong path, or lived in ways you do not want anyone else to know. You may believe God forgives other people, but you are not sure He could forgive you.

The good news of the Gospel is for people with real stories, real failures, and real questions. Jesus does not ask us to clean up our past before coming to Him. He invites us to come honestly, receive His mercy, and begin a new life with Him.

If you are searching for how do you get to know Jesus, or wondering how to know Jesus personally, start here: Jesus is full of grace, truth, and compassion. Your past is not greater than His love.

Jesus’ forgiveness is greater than your past

The Bible does not pretend that sin is unimportant. Sin harms our relationship with God and with others. Romans 3:23 reminds us that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Every one of us needs mercy.

But the Bible also tells us that God made a way for forgiveness through Jesus Christ.

Jesus gave His life on the cross for our sins. He was buried, and He rose again. His sacrifice was not only for respectable people or those who made fewer mistakes. It was for sinners who would turn to Him in faith.

Romans 5:8 gives us this beautiful assurance: “God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Notice the timing. Christ did not wait until we became perfect. He loved us while we were still sinners. That means we can come to Him today, even while we are still growing, healing, and learning to follow Him.

God does not turn away the person who comes to Him

One of the fears many people carry is that they have gone too far. They may think their sins are too serious, their habits are too deeply rooted, or their mistakes are too public to be forgiven.

Jesus gives us a different promise.

In John 6:37, He says, “Whoever comes to me I will never drive away.” This is a promise for anyone who comes to Him. It does not say that Jesus welcomes only those who have lived a perfect life. It says that the person who comes will not be rejected.

Your past may explain some of your struggles, but it does not have to define your future. When you place your trust in Christ, your identity begins to change. You are no longer only the person who failed, wandered, or made harmful choices. In Christ, you can become a forgiven child of God.

Second Corinthians 5:17 says, “If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”

This does not mean that every painful memory disappears immediately. It does mean that Jesus begins a real work of renewal in your heart, your choices, your relationships, and your purpose.

What does it mean to know Jesus personally?

Many people ask, how to know Christ or how to get to know Jesus. Knowing Jesus is more than knowing facts about Him. It is more than attending a church service or listening to Christian music. It is entering a relationship with Him through faith.

To know Jesus personally means that you:

  1. Recognize your need for Him.
We cannot save ourselves through good works, education, success, or religious activity. We need God’s grace.

  2. Believe in Jesus Christ.
Trust that He is the Son of God who died for your sins and rose from the dead.

  3. Confess your sin honestly.
You do not need impressive words. You can speak plainly to God and tell Him the truth.

  4. Turn toward God.
Repentance means turning away from a life centered on sin and turning toward Jesus as Lord. This is a daily journey of learning to follow Him.

  5. Begin walking with Him.
Spend time in prayer, read Scripture, connect with other believers, and allow God to shape your life.

This is how getting to know Jesus begins. You do not need to understand everything before taking the first step. A relationship grows over time. As you pray, listen to God’s Word, and follow Him, you learn more about His character and His love.

How do I know if Jesus knows me?

This is another deeply personal question: How do I know if Jesus knows me?

Jesus knows every person completely. He knows our thoughts, wounds, history, and questions. Psalm 139 describes God’s complete knowledge of us. Nothing about your life is hidden from Him.

But Jesus also calls us to know Him through faith. In John 10:14, He says, “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me.”

The evidence that you belong to Christ is not that you never struggle. The evidence is that your heart is turning toward Him. You desire His forgiveness. You want to understand His Word. You feel sorrow over sin and a growing desire to live in a way that honors Him.

Spiritual growth may be slow at times. You may still face temptation, fear, doubt, and weakness. Do not mistake the struggle for rejection. A growing Christian is still growing.

First John 1:9 tells us, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” Confession is not a way to earn salvation again. It is how we remain honest and close to God as we walk with Him.

Forgiveness does not always remove earthly consequences

Jesus truly forgives, but forgiveness does not always erase every earthly consequence of our choices. Sometimes relationships need time to heal. Sometimes we need to accept responsibility, seek counseling, repay what we can, or make a sincere apology.

These steps do not purchase God’s forgiveness. They are ways we can respond to His grace.

If your past includes harm to another person, seek wise and safe guidance about how to make things right. If your past includes addiction, abuse, or serious emotional pain, reaching out to a trusted pastor, counselor, or qualified professional can be an important part of healing.

God’s grace brings both forgiveness and transformation. He meets us where we are, but He loves us too much to leave us there.

Practical steps for beginning again with Jesus

If you want to get to know Jesus, begin with simple, faithful steps:

  • Pray honestly each day. Tell Jesus what you are afraid of, what you regret, and what you hope will change.
  • Read one Gospel. Start with the Gospel of John and pay attention to how Jesus treats people.
  • Write down God’s promises. Begin with John 3:16, Romans 5:8, Romans 8:1, 1 John 1:9, and John 6:37.
  • Find Bible-centered community. A healthy church or mature Christian friend can encourage you and help answer your questions.
  • Practice obedience one step at a time. Ask God to show you one decision, habit, or relationship where you can follow Him today.
  • Give yourself time to grow. A new life in Christ is a journey. Keep coming back to Jesus.

When guilt returns, return to God’s promises. Your feelings may change from day to day, but God’s character does not change.

Romans 8:1 says, “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” If you have trusted Christ, you do not have to live under the constant weight of condemnation. Conviction may lead you back to God, but condemnation tells you that you are hopeless. Jesus offers forgiveness, restoration, and hope.

A simple prayer for forgiveness and new life

If you are ready to turn to Jesus, you may pray in your own words. You could begin with this:

Lord Jesus, I know that I have sinned and that I need Your forgiveness. I believe You died for my sins and rose again. I place my trust in You. Please forgive me, lead me, and help me live a new life with You. Teach me how to know You personally and follow You each day. Amen.

A prayer is not a magic formula. What matters is the sincere faith of a heart turning toward Jesus. He hears those who call on Him.

Continue growing through prayer and biblical teaching

Prayer is one of the simplest ways we begin to know Jesus. It is an honest conversation with God, shaped by His Word and guided by the Holy Spirit.
